New Initiatives
With a focus on “E.S.P.…Excellent Scholarly Performance,” the Educational Advancement Foundation kicked off 2007 with the launch of two new projects.
Advocates for Black Colleges (ABC)
EAF recognizes that education is the most powerful gateway to success. The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) remain the most potent cultivating ground for African Americans. These institutions have been the nurturing ground for some of the brightest minds and must be supported and strengthened.
Advocates for Black Colleges (ABC) is a philanthropic thrust devoted to maintaining the strength and viability of HBCUs. This initiative rallies minority graduates of majority institutions to lend financial support to Historically Black Colleges and Universities via personal contributions and corporate ties. The fund-raising goal is $100,000 for each HBCU selected.
Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL has been named the first recipient of the ABC commitment.

Alpha Chapter AKA - Howard University Fund
Howard University is the founding home of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and on January 15, 2008, the Sorority will be 100 years old. As part of the Centennial Celebration, EAF is making contributions to two institutions through the Alpha Chapter AKA-Howard University Fund.
In recognition of the charitable spirit of the founders, the Sorority has established the Nellie M. Quander Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Archives in Howard University’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.
Nellie M. Quander Memorial Scholarship Fund
Named after Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s incorporator and first National President, the Nellie M. Quander Memorial Scholarship Fund offers junior or senior college students the opportunity to qualify for a full or partial scholarship. Because it is awarded in the last two years of one’s college experience, it represents a powerful financial catalyst for students entering her final years.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Archives in the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, Howard University
The Moorland-Spingarn Research Center is recognized as one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive repositories for the documentation of the history and culture of people of African descent in the Americas and other parts of the world. As one of Howard University’s major research facilities, the Center collects, preserves and makes available for research a wide range of resources chronicling the Black experience.
The Center’s Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Archives chronicles the Sorority’s history through documentation, photographs and narratives, and is a one-stop repository where those who want to learn about the organization can gain a full appreciation for the challenges overcome, obstacles hurdled, contributions made and the global respect now enjoyed.
In a time when there are few records of African-American institutions, this will be a source of pride for Alpha Kappa Alpha’s rich heritage and a tribute to the founding sisters.
The Alpha Chapter AKA-Howard University Fund fund-raising goal is $2 million, with each charitable entity receiving $1 million.
